1. Biodiversity conservation in Cyprus. NCU projects in this area aim at the establishment and operation of the Natura 2000 Network in Cyprus, the conservation of endemic, rare and threatened species, the impacts of climate change on nature and biodiversity of Cyprus, the management of the island's ecosystems and the restoration of ecologically degraded areas. These activities are combined with broader and awareness information campaign.
2. Environmental education and education for sustainable development. Projects in this area aim on enhancing education and raising awareness mainly among young people about the value of Cyprus biodiversity and the importance of nature conservation. Moreover, they aim at promoting favourable environmental attitudes among the people of Cyprus. Some activities also focus on training and awareness of young educators on issues relating to conservation and sustainable development.

For the implementation of its research projects, the NCU has secured funding from several sources, including the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, the Republic of Cyprus, the European Commission and the United Nations. In addition, NCU has the support of Frederick University.

The Unit has created strategic alliances and cooperated with numerous distinguished partners both from Cyprus and abroad.

In the framework of its activities, NCU promotes and is actively engaged in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on: SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 4 (Quality Education).
